KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 27): Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (SCIP) in Johor has been awarded two five-diamond awards from Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) at the Low Carbon City Awards 2024.

In a statement dated Feb 27, Sunway Property, the property arm of Sunway Bhd (KL:SUNWAY), noted that the first award recognises SCIP’s green master plan design that has led to a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions while the other serves to highlight the joint effort between Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) and SCIP in developing a low-carbon city.

It added that the awards are based on MGTC’s evaluation across five key sustainability elements namely energy, water, waste, mobility and greenery.

With a gross development value of over RM30 billion, SCIP is Sunway’s largest township to date, spanning across 2,000 acres.

The statement said that the township is the developer’s only green-certified township, and its green status is achieved through a holistic approach to sustainable development, integrating initiatives such as electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, solar panels, dedicated bicycle lanes, repurposing lake water for landscape irrigation and having comprehensive security measures throughout the township. Some 40% of the township consists of green spaces, it added.

SCIP chief executive officer Gerard Soosay said, “[The recognition from MGTC] serve as impetuses for us to continue championing green urban living and carrying out innovative sustainability initiatives, such as expanding our cloud-based recycling data system [and] smart, and energy-efficient infrastructure that enhances both environmental sustainability and community well-being,” said

MBIP mayor Ahmad Nazir Mohd Nasir: “Collective action is key in driving meaningful change, and our collaboration with SCIP has been fundamental in building a low-carbon, sustainable future. We are proud to have been recognised by MGTC for our work with SCIP to reduce emissions in the township through the implementation of smart technologies and sustainable practices, which also contributes to the overall quality of life for residents.”
